CUTCORTEX / PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE

Digitise paper patterns without losing scale.

A practical guide to existing paper patterns: preparation, reference dimensions, contour cleanup and verification of the digital master.

Prepare the original

Flatten the template and identify its front and back, material direction and important notches. Restore missing edge information using the approved design. Digitising does not automatically correct errors in the original.

Record references before capture

Measure several independent distances, including a long overall dimension and a small functional detail. Record the unit. A controlled capture is essential for image templates because perspective distortion changes the geometry.

Clean the contour deliberately

A densely traced line can contain many unnecessary points. Smooth it while preserving the intended shape. Check critical curves and joining edges against measured references; visual similarity alone is not enough.

Approve the digital master

Compare the result with the original and make a test cut. Retain the verified digital master with its origin and verification result. Use a clearly named variant for subsequent changes.

  • Document source and reference dimensions
  • Check critical curves and edge lengths
  • Transfer notches and orientation
  • Compare the test piece with the original
